The castle of Kalogeros

At the east side of the village Apollonas there is a small mountain called Kalogeros (the monk). Its summit is at 360 m. A big part of Kalogeros is in the sea and the sea edge of it is known as cape Veneti. A cave is found there, which is said to communicate with another cave to the north of the village Koronida.

At the top of Kalogeros there is a small valley. The mountain is smoother at its west side (at the side of Apollonas, from where the climbing to the top is possible) while all its other sides are very steep.

At the top of the mountain there are the ruins of a prehistoric castle, which is placed at an almost horizontal area on the mountain’s valley, the length of which is 100-150 m and its width is   60-80 m. The overall extension of the castle is 2000 square meters, while its tower and its walls are built with huge stones.

The castle of Kalogeros also has buildings and parts that belong to the Byzantine era. (9th century A.C.)

The castle has two significant fortifications, one at the north side and one at the south side. There are also the ruins of the fortification of the west side, as well as the entrance to which, obviously, led secret paths. The east part was unfortified because the mountain is very steep, rocky and inaccessible from there. This goes for a large part of the west side.

In the castle there are many buildings, rooms, warehouses, many water tanks in good condition, the ruins of a small church and the foundations of the fortification of the prehistoric part of the wall. The northern part of the castle is 50 m. long, 2-2.20 m. wide and up to 4 m. tall.

At the north-western part of the wall there is a room in good position, probably a guardhouse, with two entrances. The northern wall of the castle, as well as the water tanks were built during the Byzantine era. The southern part of the wall is built with huge stones while the northern part is built with small elaborated stones. The northern wall is 19m. long, 2.30 m. wide and 2-4 m. high. Near the northern wall, there are the traces of a tower, at te same height as the wall.

North-eastern of the cape Veneti there are the ruins of a wall and a large water tank in a relatively good condition, as well as the ruins of a small church.
