In the centre of Naxos between two streams and a forest from olives, is located the small village of Vourvouria.

It is a graphic settlement that most maps do not include, but you will pass from there in your way to mountainous and central Naxos.
The name Vourvouria is the sound of the nature and the verse of a poem.
The "Vourvouria'" took the name after the noise of waters that runs continuously or after the plants bulrush (vourla) that grow up in the riversides. Men of art and literature said that the village should be named “heaven” or “
Mesopotamia” (area between two rivers).  In the decade of 1950 the village was full of life and 150 people lived there between them 40 children. Today the village has 20 houses and 25 permanent residents.

In most houses the architecture is uniform.
Mansions, whitewashed, stone houses with pountia (big balconies),
volta (arches), and courtyards compose the village. It is said that alls houses were built by the same workman.

In the settlement remnants from 3 old olive presses exist and show the occupation of residents and the big production of oil at past years.
Come to Vourvouria and walk through the alleys. Begin from Agia Paraskevi, follow the shady path, in company with lilacs, oranges, olives and bull aces. In little you will reach in the other Agia Paraskevi of the next hill. Light the vigil-candle and look up from high the villages in the silver olive grove. Pass from the square in your way to the river, in your street you will meet the rosemary. You will see the well and old wash-houses.

Still runs the water that satisfied the thirst of the village.
Still is heard the beat of the battledore, from the landlords that washed the clothes. In your walk, I wish you meet Giorgi of Koula. The Grandfather of village, will make a small basket for you, will say fairy tales to you, will talk to you for life, will give you bless and wishes.
In the afternoon, if you see some resident with keys in the hand you will just know that he goes to light on the vigil-candles of the churches of the village.

The churches that exist in the village are the following: Saint Prokopios (built at 1809-1810) and is the parish church, Saint Georgios (1762), Agia Paraskevi(1397), and Saint Konstantinos (1311), which reveal the presence of Vourvourja in the Byzantine season.

On 8 July is celebrated the Saint Prokopios with islander bells and procession of the old icon in alleys of the village. In the air is pervasive the smell of incense.

A lot of residents left and migrated far away, from the smaller
village of Naxos.
All however dream of the return, to the bigger
Paradise of the island.
To Vourvouria.
