Chora

As the ship draws closer to the beautiful port of Naxos, the first impression you get from Chora will be imprinted on your mind forever! “Portara”, the huge marble gate, a remnant of the Apollon`s temple which was never finished, will capture your sight. Unique and impressive as it is, Portara stands imposingly since centuries on the islet “Palatia”, always open to the Naxos’ guests who crowd in when it is bathed in the light of the sunset, to capture it in a picture.

The ship has docked at the port, the sight is “unhooked” from the imposing Portara and the Chora of Naxos, which concentrates all the characteristic Cycladic elements, unfolds before your eyes, willing to let you stroll around it and discover its hidden beauties.

Built around the hill of the medieval castle Marco Sanudo, Chora carries the memories of another age, which is testified by the important monuments that are spread throughout the island. In born of the two older districts of the town which are built on the hill, in Bourgo and Kastro (meaning castle), you will admire unique Venetian buildings and monuments, the Jesuits’, Capuchins’ and Ursulines monasteries, impressive mansion houses with Venetian elements scattered in the labyrinthine alleys, churches and neighborhoods with a rich history. North of the town is the region Grotta, where the remains of the antique Naxos of the Classic ages are visible on the bottom of the sea. Remains of the antique town and finds of different ages which are brought to light by the excavations are housed in the Archaeological Museum and in the Site Museum, which operate in Chora. On the south end of the beautiful Cycladic town, you will see the Agios Georgios beach.

Chora, the capital town of the island, supplies all modern facilities as well as plenty of services, while it has a rich market, many entertainment options, restaurants, “ouzeri” (taverns serving “meze”, which is traditional small dishes, accompanied by ouzo), and is ideal to go for walking, not only in the small alleys with the snow-white houses, but also on the coastal road, which bustles with life.
